Of any of the heroes in New York City, none is more established than Peter Parker, the Amazing Spider-Man. Much like Gotham's Batman or Metropolis' Superman, the Web-Slinger has become synonymous with the Big Apple for the better part of a decade.
On a school trip to Oscorp, Parker was bitten by a genetic-engineered spider that had accidentally been infused by Dr. Stromm's Super Soldier Serum. The venomous combination of the Serum and spider DNA forever altered Parker, giving him super strength, heightened agility, and a strange precognitive "spider sense". After failing to save his Uncle Ben, Parker build web-shooters and a costume, taking on the identity of Spider-Man.
Much like Batman, Spider-Man developed his own heroic "family" - a collection of heroes which shared the spider motif.
The first of these was Spider-Woman, a brainwashed agent of HYDRA which was part of a program to create an assassin by duplicating Spider-Man's abilities. Using transgenic technology to integrate arachnid genetic code to her DNA, Jessica Drew was trained by elite mercenary Taskmaster before being sent on missions. When Spider-Man encountered Drew, he managed to break her programming, in which case she became an occasional ally.
The Scarlet Spider was an identity indirectly born out of the machinations of Dr. Miles Warren, chief of genetics at Oscorp. Tasked with Norman Osborn to discover the source of Spider-Man's power. Using blood harvested from Parker during a run-in with the Hobgoblin, clones were made that possessed all of the Web-Slingers powers. Donning the identity of the Spider-Man, the clone attempted to replace Peter as the protector of New York. After his defeat, this clone was given the name Ben Reilly by Spider-Man and helped him fight crime as the Scarlet Spider. When Ben's programming reasserted itself, he betrayed the Spider-Family and became the villainous mercenary Black Spider.
Peter rescued young Miles Morales from an Oscorp special project that was attempting to use Stromm and HYRDA technology to create a human biological weapon to kill Spider-Man. Taking the young Miles under his wing, he decided to use Reilly's costumed identity to train him to be a superhero, becoming the new Scarlet Spider.
Gwen Stacy was Peter Parker's first girlfriend. Her death at the hands of Green Goblin affected him greatly. Years later, Spider-Man was shocked to discover a mysterious individual operating in New York which seemingly shared his powers. Believing her to be another Oscorp project he confronted her, only to find out that it was Gwen. With no memory of her origins, its unclear whether Stacy is a clone or the original or from another timeline. She currently has taken on the identity of Ghost-Spider.
Metahuman teenager Anya Corazon was a metahuman enhanced agility, endurance, and strength. A fan of Spider-Man, she dressed in a home-made outfit and fought crime as Araña. Peter and Miles have taken on the responsibility of training Anya and after giving her a new costume, she has joined the Spider-Family as Spider-Girl.
