Created by the Office of National Emergency, The Shield was intended to reinforce national superiority in the face of the United Nations' empowered Justice League. Though not official policy, members of the Shield have taken to using their nickname "The Avengers" in an official capacity, much to the chagrin of Directors Fury and Hill.
The Shield is divided up into the following teams:
Team Alpha was the public face of the Avengers, a team made up of the most powerful and public heroes. They would be involved in most of the most prominent operations as well as the largest public relations events. These included Steve Rogers, the original Captain America; King T'Challa of Wakanda, The Black Panther; Tony Stark, who secretly piloted the prototype military war-suit code-named Iron Man; Bruce Banner whose research into the Super Soldier Serum led him to become The Hulk; Thor Odinson, the Nordic god of thunder; Scarlet Witch, a former member of the Brotherhood of Mutants; The Vision, an advanced synthetic android. All of Team Alpha was killed in the Watchtower incident, replaced by Team Gamma.
The original Team Gamma was the former students of the Hammond Academy, promoted to being junior members of the Avengers. They were led by Mary Marvel, empowered by the Rock of Eternity; Adrasteia, the centaur warrior from Thermyscira; Loki, the Asgardian who took on his brother's mantle as god of thunder as well as deception; Melinoe, the Greek goddess of nightmares; After the Watchtower incident, Team Gamma became the new Team Alpha.
The new Team Gamma was established after the Incident and was made up of other students of Hammond High that were handpicked by the original Team Gamma members. It was composed of the newly-crowned Queen Shuri of Wakanda, the new Black Panther; Gwen Stacy, the Friendly Neighbourhood Ghost-Spider; The metahuman Kamala Khan who has become Ms. Marvel; Eli Bradley, the modern Patriot; Doreen Green, the unbeatable Squirrel Girl.
Team Epsilon was tasked in helping America's allies in Europe, who had lost the Heroes of Paris during the Watchtower incident. They were led by former Team Gamma members Mercury and She-Hulk, they were composed by former Rogues Commander Cold, Golden Glider, Pied Piper, and The Trickster.
After a host of metahumans were rescued from Trask Industries, the Xavier Institute asked O.N.E. to take care of individuals who technically did not possess the meta-gene. Mentored by Pepper Potts a.k.a. Rescue, this new Team Delta was composed of Panacea, an actual shape-shifted unicorn; Seraph, a genetically-engineered human with bio-organic wings; and Shrike, a female clone of Wolverine.
Formerly a Covert Action Team, Team Omega was incorporated into the Avengers chain of command as a less-public operations team. It was led by legendary Russian spy Natasha Romanov, code-named The Black Widow. Members of Omega were Scott Lang, the current incarnation of Ant-Man; Clint Baton, the uncannily-accurate archer known as Hawkeye; The Asgardian warrior known only as The Valkyrie; James Rhodes who wears the heavy combat version of the Iron-Man armor nicknamed The War-Machine; and Buchanan Barnes, who had formally been the HYRDA assassin known as The Winter Soldier. Along with Team Alpha, all members of Omega were lost in the Watchtower Incident.
