Intergang is an organized crime syndicate which has expanded across the United States. Its origins lay in a crackdown by the F.B.I in the early 2010s which resulted in the heads of over a hundred crime family's being indicted and their operations shut down. This forced formerly antagonistic groups to work together to survive law enforcement and prevent overseas rivals from gaining a foothold in America.
Although the intention was to have a council to run Intergang, eventually the syndicate came under the control of a single man. Amongst those in Intergang had an unofficial title: The Kingpin of Crime.
The original Kingpin was Bruno Mannheim. The leader of the Mannheim Crime Family in Metropolis, he was the son of famed crimelord, Maximillian "Moxie" Mannheim. In the years before the emergence of Superman, Boss Moxie was the undisputed ruler of Metropolis' underground. When Bruno finally inherited his criminal empire, he became one of the richest men in America.
Threatened by the Man of Steel, Bruno turned to Intergang for protection. Known for results he moved up the ranks until he reached The Commission, the highest ranking authority of Intergang. It took years of work to gain influence or control over the other members, but eventually, Mannheim rose to take on full control of the organization.
Bruno would accomplish a great number of successful operations during his years as Kingpin, but his most infamous was his Apocalypse Guns. His procurement of this high-efficiency energy guns earned Intergang millions from organizations around the world as well as discourage their enemies from directly attacking. No one knew how the Kingpin procured these devices, only that he had enough supply no matter how big the order.
Mannheim was eventually taken down by a rare alliance between the Metropolis Special Crimes Unit, the F.B.I., and the Justice League. It is said that Superman and Batman themselves were on hand to shut down their chief operating facility and confiscate their supply of illicit weapons. Bruno Mannheim was convicted of hundreds of criminal charges and has been sentenced to life imprisonment.
The current Kingpin is believed to be Wilson Fisk, a brilliant industrialist operating out of New York City. He had long had gained control of the major crime organizations in the city, cultivating a web of blackmail and obligations in order to enforce his will.
He has already clashed with local heroes such as Spider-Man and Daredevil; With his rise to the position of Kingpin, it will be interesting to see the changes that Fisk will implement to Intergang, especially in the face of the death of The Shield and the Justice League.
